Adult acne

Acne, a common condition of the skin, happens when hair follicles get clogged with a mixture of dirt, dead skin cells and sebum (an oily substance produced naturally by your skin). Often, bacteria grow in this mixture as well, causing redness, swelling and pus. The term “acne” refers to blackheads, whiteheads, pimples and cysts. Acne usually appears on your face and neck, but you can also get it on your shoulders, back or arms.

You may think that acne will be left behind as you get older, but teenage acne can persist into adulthood, and sometimes, adults who never had pimples before can get acne. Adult women get acne much more often than adult men.

Having acne can be very disheartening.

Acne causes

Your sebaceous glands (the glands that produce sebum) can be overactive, producing too much oil, which can clog pores and lead to the redness and swelling associated with acne. Heredity can also play a part – if your parents had acne, it’s more likely that you will, too.

Things that make acne get WORSE:

  • Popping, picking or squeezing pimples
  • Stress
  • Sun exposure
  • Scrubbing too hard when you wash your face
  • Washing your face too often

Things that may make acne get BETTER:

  • Washing your face once or twice a day with acne wash
  • Using only oil-free make up
  • Washing your make-up brushes and applicators regularly with anti-microbial soap
  • Washing your pillow cases and sheets often
  • Using sunscreen

Things you can do

It’s important to deal with acne as early as possible. This can help avoid permanent scarring and/or the emotional or psychological effects of having acne.
