Put the spark back in your life

"As we go through our hectic days, our obligations and responsibilities can take over the joy in our lives," says psychotherapist and life coach Antoinette Giacobbe. "And so often, we forget to make time to be playful, alert, curious, optimistic and spontaneous. We become stuck in a pattern and, in a sense, stop feeling alive." Unfortunately, some of us may even turn to drugs or alcohol to numb the pain of losing ourselves.

So how do we bring some of the joy back into our adult lives and schedules? Antoinette says that it's a matter of getting serious about bringing happiness and energy into our days. Here's her advice on how to put some spark back in your life:

  • Give yourself permission to step out of your routine. Getting unstuck isn't going to happen by accident; you need to make it happen — even with small steps at a time. "If the first thing you do in the morning is check your schedule for the day, then set a time to do something spontaneous," says Antoinette. "Do whatever you feel like doing, without feeling guilty."

  • Live in the now. Rather than sleepwalk through your day, use all of your senses — see, hear, taste, smell and touch — to experience the world around you. Take notice of what's around you and be fascinated by things you haven't noticed before.

  • Be an explorer. Rediscover the fun in learning. "When you find something interesting, go online and research it," says Antoinette. "If you see an interesting rock, pick it up and turn it over. Is a flower blooming at a co-workers desk? Then stop and ask about the plant, touch and smell it too."

  • Do something creative. Take a break from the usual, pull out paper and pens/pencils and start doodling, drawing, painting or colouring. If that's not your thing, come up with funny rhymes, poems or a short story. The point is to analyze less and create more.

  • Play around with something fun. Regardless of your age, lace up roller skates or ice skates. Try a skateboard. Climb a tree. Make sandcastles. Ride a bike. Jump in a pool of water. Do something that puts a smile on your face — whatever that may be.

  • Be less critical, more open minded. Antoinette says that we can all make use of a more playful attitude at work and at home. Bring your coworkers together to brainstorm solutions to a work problem. Call a family meeting and figure out how to have more family dinners together. Listen to every suggestion and imagine the possible outcome.

  • Try something new. "As adults, we tend to stop challenging ourselves in different ways," says Antoinette. "To combat that, step outside your comfort zone — even just a little." Think you have two left feet? Sign up for dance lessons. Want to feel more energetic? Start a walking or running program. Want to have fun with the entire family? Have a family bowling night.

  • Keep trying. Being spontaneous and taking risks takes courage — especially to get back up if you fall. Remember that the next time you're about to give up on something before you really tried to succeed.

  • Write about your dreams. Start a journal as a way to capture what's great about your day and what hopes you have for the future. Use your imagination and explore your wildest dreams. Then try to figure out how to make them come true.

"It takes time to change our habits and patterns, so be patient, persistent and consistent," says Antoinette. "Keep using these tips and you'll find that being more curious, playful and spontaneous can become a valuable part of your adult self."
